| Google announces TISP - Free community high speed internet access. Details |
|
Verrrrry Interesting. Check at Google announces TISP. Our impression is that the concept may be a bit crappy but a lot of thought went into the process.
Actually, it may be worth some thought. Not long ago, communications specialists experimented with using ground water connections for low frequency radio. With today's technology that may be possible. It may be worth a think! You make it, we'll use it.

| Issues with Rural High Speed Wireless & Voip |
|
Two wireless service providers in our rural area have had problems with maintaining their connections to their customers. It is probable that all wireless providers have the same kinds of issues. Platinum.ca, our current provider advised they were working hard on the issues.
|
|
|
Bonus - Our service providers worked hard and we have had excellent connection speed and reliability. I have been using my network connection for well over a month and have not had any interruptions nor decrease in access speed.

For the internet, email and gaming there are a few things you can do to stay connected. Some or all of the following suggestions can keep you out of trouble:
|
- Don't lose your kool with your service provider - they are in the business of helping you. Their expertise is valuable.
- Know your equipment and make fewer mistakes. Through ignorance you can make the same mistake more than once.
- Keep your operating system updated. Your security depends on being current.
- Do not EVER use illegal, copied, or questionable software. You security is worth a lot more than whatever dollars you saved cutting corners.
- Stay away from questionable sites. They are probably in business to rip you off. Rip off sites can install nasty programs and utilities on your computer that can slow you down considerably.
- Do not open email, not even for a peak, if you know nothing about the content or the sender. Rip off artists send emails loaded with programs, trick graphics and garbage that can turn your computer into a very slow machine that does what the rip off artist wants it to do.
- Disconnect from the network when you are not accessing the outside world. If you don't know how and don't know how to reconnect without booting your equipment, then Click on CONTACT US and send us your question.

Don't use WEP, say German security researchers
By: Peter Sayer
"IDG News Service (Paris Bureau) (04 Apr 2007)
The Wi-Fi security protocol WEP should not be relied on to protect sensitive material, according to three German security researchers who have discovered a faster way to crack it..."
With the advances in high speed computing the time taken to crack intercepted wireless data has dropped from days to seconds. Many home based computer systems that use wireless routers can be hacked and data intercepted very quickly by anyone using a highspeed laptop outside your home. The best security setting on your router only slows the process down to a few minutes now. Your emails and banking information are not secure anymore.
"... it takes just 3 seconds to extract a 104-bit WEP key from intercepted data using a 1.7GHz Pentium M processor. The necessary data can be captured in less than a minute, and the attack requires so much less computing power than previous attacks that it could even be performed in real time ...
Anyone using Wi-Fi to transmit data they want to keep private, whether it's banking details or just e-mail, should consider switching from WEP to a more robust encryption protocol..."
This is not good news for wireless customers. The question now is, what is a "more robust encryption protocol." The answer according to PCMag.com, is: WPA, "WiFi Protected Access." When we get it working, we will let you know our impressions.

Video Goggles, HUD, Head Mounted Display, Gamer's Glasses
|
The wide angle lens on our digital camera blocks the view finder and the LCD screen can not be viewed in bright sunlight.
We searched the net with some difficulty and found the following.
|
- Liteye Systems monochrome now, but color coming soon.
I talked with the developer, Rick Sondag, and he is enthusiastic about his products. He advised the display is sharp and easy to use. It is compatible with standard RCA connections.
- I-glasses for use with i-Pods or any AV system
- Head Mounted Displays including the above
- and most camera stores sell LCD hoods that block sunlight

| SOFTWARE WE TRIED RECENTLY |
| Personal information managers and calendars can be found everywhere. But one that is free and works well can be found at the link below. It really works! It looks like Outlook's calendar and it imports address books. We have been using it since the beginning of May of this year and like it. |
|
| Another Personal information manager but this one is for my new cell phone and it works. With Outlook or Outlook Express I can download my contacts to the Nokia Cell phone. With the full version of Outlook I can synchronize my calendar. |
